The Calm before the Revolution
Ryo wanted to believe in his wife, his country. He needed to know that placing his trust in his love was to have faith in the right vision for their, their people's, future, the fate of the chikara entangled in their own destiny. Only an honorable end to these new people could dawn a noble beginning for their own.
He paced and paced their American apartment, waiting, waiting for some word, some sign. The ornate vase of white roses, the Persian rug, the overstuffed furniture, the gigantic refrigerator, the degrees from American universities on the wallâeverything was a lie. He needed truth to walk through the door.
A knock. He rushed to the door. Unlocked. Opened: Miranda Baylor in her gray suit, brunette hair pulled into a high bun.
"Where's Aika?"
Miranda walked past him, into the apartment. "I'm sure Olivia will be here shortly. Just give her a moment, Sam."
"Should you even be here?"
Miranda went into the living room and sat on the plush sofa. "Olivia is a dear friend of mine from school. She needed a job; I got her one. I am just checking up to see how she's making out." She wanted to be sympathetic. Ryo was an officer, not a spy. But neither was Aika, and she had adapted so beautifully. Ryo was shaking:
"She should be here by now."
"Be polite, Sam. And offer me a drink. Why, yes, I'd love one."
Ryo went into the kitchen.
"I came to share in person that Aika has been cleared of all suspicions concerning her squad. Between the investigation, her admirable service here, and whatever has gotten the minister hyped up as of late, it's been deemed time to move on. You've proved your loyalty."
Ryo looked to her over the counter, holding a glass with ice: "What did she do?"
"Your wife has done your family proud." She straightened her skirt, then removed a recorder. Play: pingpingpingpingping...
"What is that?"
"Dr. Cassandra Farling."
"Who?"
"Yes, who would've been more correct. But how were you to know. Suffice to say: this recording singlehandedly eliminates BeckPro and Excelsior as the manufacturers of the chikara. You should be proud."
That was the third time she tried to command his feelings. "Proved your loyalty"âsaid like he should have felt relief. "Done your family proud," "Should be proud"âlike an arrogant American betraying her country could preach to him about honor and pride.
"Who are you to tell me how to feel towards my wife?"
"Point taken."
Ryo ran the tap, filled the glass. He brought Miranda her water, and they sat in silenceâRyo thinking of Aika, Miranda on her phone, messaging.
She was not one to talk about dignity, character. She was just trying to make him feel better. Thirteen years of her life were spent twisting her mindâExcelsior. And she still couldn'tâwhat? Redeem herself? How old world. How literary. How did she make up for the actions of a conglomerate that found excuses to bomb schools just to test their latest "PINS?" How would she even make up for her insignificant part in it
